Haifa Shen, M.D., Ph.D.

Contact Principal Investigator

Dr. Haifa Shen is Full Professor of Nanomedicine at the Institute for Academic Medicine and Full Member of Houston Methodist Research Institute. He is also a faculty member in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at Weill Cornell Medicine. A cancer biologist with a strong interest in applying material science, physics and nanotechnology in cancer research and drug development, Dr. Shen is particularly interested in addressing one of the bottleneck problems in cancer treatment, which is the difficulty to enrich therapeutic agents in the tumor tissue, especially in metastatic tumors. With previous support from a National Cancer Institute U54 grant, Dr. Shen’s team applied multidisciplinary approaches to develop strategies that enabled effective mass transport of particulate drugs both at the systemic level and inside the tumor tissue. In the current Center for Immunotherapeutic Transport Oncophysics (CITO), the investigators are applying mathematics modeling to understand transport of immune cells in vaccinated mice and to use the information to further improve tumor accumulation of T lymphocyte and to boost anti-tumor immunity.

Dr. Shen serves as Multi-PI with Dr. Jenny Chang on CITO. Dr. Shen is also an Administrative Core Co-Leader, Co-Leader of Project 1, and Co-Leader of the Transport Oncophysics Core.
